KALISZ - THE OLDEST POLISH CITY
In 1960, Kalisz solemnly celebrated the 1800 anniversary of its documented history.
Historians argue, citing various documents, about the date when the city was granted the Charter. In order to avoid such arguments, we can only say for sure that Kalisz is the oldest ever mentioned settlement on the terrain of today's Poland. It was already in the ancient times, around the year 142 AD, when the geographer Ptolemy documented the existence of the Calisia settlement, while the first buildings had been built much earlier.Further written mentions about the history of Kalisz began to appear only one thousand years later, but intensive archaeological research after World War II confirmed the authenticity of the ancient records. The research revealed traces of settlements in Kalisz surroundings dating back to the Bronze Age (17-7 century BC).
